Welcome. Welcome back to the podcast. We have another guest expert today for you, and I'm actually really looking forward to this conversation. Carrie Cutie is with us to talk a little bit about the connection between physical healing and spiritual healing. And we're just gonna have a lot of fun with this conversation.
So before we jump in, will you please introduce yourself to us and help us understand who you are first. Sure. Well, first of all, I'm so excited to be here. I know it was totally a God connection, and so, um, I just know that, uh, this, this, uh, conversation's gonna be amazing. So thank you for having me. Um, so as you can tell, I am from the south.
People always ask me, so where are you from? Um, I'm from Georgia, a small town in [00:06:00] Georgia. Um. I have, um, I'm married. I have two kids, um, 12 and 10, so they keep me very busy. Um, I'm a traditionally trained pharmacist, so I've been a pharmacist and worked in the pharmacy industry actually since I was 16, so a very long time.
Um, I. And you know, it was, it was around 12, 13 years ago when um, I was actually wanting to conceive, um, but who's now my daughter. It was taking me a while to get pregnant and that kind of sent me down a whole rabbit hole of why am I not getting pregnant? And that just helped me to realize, wow, it matters what I eat and what I put on my body, et cetera.
So that kind of really opened my eyes to there was a different way to take care of yourself and. Um, I didn't know anything other than pharmacy really. And so that kind of opened my eyes and I started realizing, wow, I can help people in a much different way, in a much more preventative, natural way. Um, and so that's, that's kind of how my journey started with, uh, helping people with root cause issues and, and more natural solutions.
And so. [00:07:00] Actually what kind of facilitated that change and allowed me to actually leave my pharmacy job was essential oils. Um, they, they were definitely for like myself and my family, but God had other plans and so that was a really big part of my story. But, um, I just kept learning and got a few more certifications.
And so now I have an online practice, um, where we focus on this physical, emotional, spiritual connection to health and healing. And so that's what I'm passionate about. I just. I want people to know about Jesus and I want people to feel better and be healed. And so that's a little bit about me. Yeah. I appreciate the whole body approach.
Right? Yeah. I think when we see health and wellness, traditionally it's like nutrition and exercise and there's so much more that's connected, you know, with it. Yeah. And so maybe kind of share how do we connect this spiritual emotional healing with. Physical healing. Sure. Um, [00:08:00] you know, I would say up until the last year or so, I definitely was.
Pretty much solely focused on physical health, helping other people with that, even myself. And so I share, share a little bit of my journey with that. Um, but it wasn't until, um, who is now my partner helped me to see a lot of the emotional connections. And then I think the Lord just kind of revealed that, oh, there's actually spiritual connections to that too.
Um, so this is, it's kind of a newer thing for me in a sense of, gosh, I really have been in this industry for a while, and it's only been like maybe the last year, but. But it all makes sense though. So I think you just put together a lot of that for me recently. Um, so in my own specific journey, um, mine kind of is more digestive focused.
Uh, I've struggled with constipation for years and years and years and, um, tried all the things, all the diet changes, all the protocols, et cetera. And, um, last fall, uh, I actually realized, um. [00:09:00] I went to a retreat and kind of just, I felt like the Lord spoke to me that there was somebody really significant in my life that I needed to forgive for various things.
And it's like I knew that, but I didn't really understand, I guess, how big of a part it was playing not only in my physical health, but also just emotionally and spiritually. And so. It wasn't until after that that I realized, wow, I don't have this digestive issue anymore. And I was just holding on to a lot of that.
You know, I think I had heard before, like, if you're constipated, you might be holding on to something that you don't realize. But it was like, it didn't click for me. And so it just, it just all made so much sense. And so that, that was a really, really big piece for me to see personally that. This is really a thing and, and a lot of the clients I was seeing, they would get better with the physical, you know, only focusing on the physical, but there were definitely still things that they were dealing with and, and a lot of the times it was more emotional, spiritual issues.
And then when you [00:10:00] solved those emotional, spiritual issues, they saw physical healing. Yes. Yeah. What would you say to someone right now that's a little bit skeptical? Sure. That that might be a little out there for someone to say, I totally get that. Maybe I feel aches and pains, or how do I even, how do I even know that something physical is.
An emotional or spiritual connection, not just like I have back pain. Right? Like is it always, that's a lot of questions. I'm sorry, but No, no, it's fine. No, you're fine. I'm thinking what people might be thinking of like, okay, that sounds a little silly maybe, or not so much silly, but um, like, how do I make that connection that I.
Have a particular physical ailment. Mm-hmm. And you are saying that spiritual can help heal it. Okay. You know? Does that make [00:11:00] sense? No, definitely. Okay. First off, I wanna say have an open mind. Yes. Okay. Continue listening to the podcast and just have an open mind. Okay. That's first. Second, I think it's really um, can be very helpful to first link the physical to the emotional.
I think that's an easier. Connection to make, and then possibly we can make another connection between the emotional and the spiritual. Does that make sense? Like kind of taking a stepwise approach, so. There, there is just this, uh, studied known thing, uh, in Chinese medicine that there are emotions that are connected to, uh, organs in our body.
Like for instance, anger is connected with the liver. And we started seeing this a lot. I. In clients, we would notice that, gosh, their liver is so overloaded. We've tried these different things. It's just not really seeming to get the traction. And then, you know, and then it would, we would have a conversation with them about maybe if they were angry or if they were resentful with someone and they'd be like, you know, yeah, like this, and [00:12:00] this happened in my past and I am still kind of holding onto it.
So it's just more conversations like that that, listen, if anybody was skeptical, it was me. I am, I come from a very analytical, logical background. I'm a pharmacist, right? I'm very structured. I like data. Um, but it's, you can't deny those things. So I get that it's not necessarily the same as maybe doing a lab test if you're more used to that.
Like we do use that in our practice, and I think these. It's not one or the other, they really can go together. So if, if that kind of makes more sense about how you can kind of start putting the pieces together, that's how I started anyway. So hopefully that's helpful in explaining it a little bit more.
Yeah. Well you give us a few more examples. I appreciated that example of Yeah, the liver and the emotion. So what are some mm-hmm. More common? Ailments that people might be feeling that might be connected with emotional, a need for emotional [00:13:00] healing? Sure. Okay. So the lungs are grief. So if somebody is grieving, you know, something or someone they might have, um, anything from like asthma to a recurrent infection that they can't get rid of to a cough even that they can't get rid of.
So that's one maybe not as common. I would say the liver is the most common one we see because. Physically, your liver gets overloaded with all the, like chemicals and et cetera, you know, toxins and even hormones that it has to, to, you know, uh, detox through. But there's so much unforgiveness that goes on just in big and small ways.
That is number one thing that we see is, um, the, the liver connection. There's also kidneys and fear. So if you just have a lot of. Just anxiety or fear around things. Um, and fear is definitely an emotion that's, uh, general. So there can be lots of reasons why you would fear, um, something or someone. Um, but maybe that would manifest like, um, [00:14:00] recurrent UTIs, interstitial cystitis, you know, different types of, um, kidney issues, um, such as that.
Which we know they're all connected, right? Like I'm giving specific organ and, and um, connection issues. But we know that the kidneys are connected to the entire detox pathway. So it might be something where you just can't detox very well. Maybe you've tried detoxes in the past and they haven't worked.
Your drainage system is kind of clogged. We see that a lot too. Yeah. What about, um, like stress and overwhelm? Well, stress and overwhelm is truly a side effect of undealt with emotions because what it does is the undealt with emotions. You know, it's, a lot of people have heard of the body Keep score that book.
It just, it's just this notion of if you have, you know, 'cause there's, there's big, big T traumas and little t traumas that people have been through over the years or even day to day that they just. Maybe don't really take [00:15:00] time to actually feel they just keep going because we're so distracted and busy and that our body feels that, and it makes our nervous system sort of on edge all the time, which keeps our stress response on all the time, which is like a whole ripple effect of keeping us in a place that we can't heal.
Yeah. So what about someone that is like, okay, I have, I have normal life, right? I have stressors of life. I have things come and go. How do I know that I might need to pay attention to this? Maybe it's not an extreme pain or an extreme ailment, but like why, why might we want Okay. As a general population mm-hmm.
To, to pay attention to this. Well, um, I, I'll just speak maybe for myself and then, then I could expound on that. I, I, I really had great health. Like I, I know I said the, the digestive issue, it was a very minor issue as far [00:16:00] as what other people that I see deal with, like just. We see a lot of sick people in, in our virtual practice, and so I kind of felt bad of like, gosh, I just had this little constipation issue that won't go away.
Everything else is fine, you know, but I, I really think that no matter what your situation, like, I know we haven't really talked about the emotional spiritual connection yet, but just go there with me for just a minute. Yeah. Please. These things are in our life because God is trying to get our attention.
Hmm. I really believe that. I don't think there's. Anything that happens by chance. And I think a lot of times he uses our help to get our attention because we wanna feel good. We've got different, you know, we just, we have a lot on our plate, especially as moms. And so I really think that, just that continu, I just, I just know personally, I just kept asking why, like, what am I missing?
What is, why is this one thing not going away? It's like whether you're really sick or you just have maybe little issues that, that don't seem to be resolving and, [00:17:00] and listen. We're not gonna be fully healed this side of heaven. I'm definitely not saying no. I mean, I don't have perfect health. Nobody's going to have perfect health, but it's just, um, these maybe lingering issues that I feel like are really, um, they're from the Lord so that we will keep asking and pursuing.
And I think if we do that, um, in a, in a really heartfelt way, he's going to show us what the answer is. I love that. One thing that we talk about around here is that you have the ability to know and meet your own body's needs, and what you're really saying is like, let's channel the, you know, the, the communication from heaven and, and asking God to heal, you know?
Right. Yeah. And saying, direct me to the place. The places, the, the, the modalities that I need to heal. And some of it might be some physical changes and we just, I think as a society, we just don't accept that there's [00:18:00] a, there's an emotional component of it because it's hard to study. Right. It's kind of hard to like, yes.
So give the specific, I have thoughts on that. Yes. Let's have thoughts on that. So I, so you know, I mean, up until the last year or so, I mean, I was all about just physical help and I just remember this moment of, gosh, all that thing, all those things that I thought were hard, like. Diet changes or all the supplements or whatever exercise, I realized, no, this is actually the hard work of like sitting with hard things and being vulnerable and just going there if, if you will.
That's actually the hard thing, and so I think that's really what we avoid because it, it is hard. There's no two ways about it. It's hard to accept. The thing, the hard, you know, the things that people have done to us, maybe the mistakes that we've made, et cetera. Um, but that's really where the healing is because I think so often we, and we'll, we can talk about this more and in [00:19:00] kind of bridging the emotional and the, the spiritual it is that once we kind of maybe realize that there is an emotional component, let's say, of unforgiveness, well, well then we have to be, we have to be truthful and sit in the truth of.
The hard with the unforgiveness of whatever happened. And, and it's that truth of where God's meet. God meets us because when we're living in with unforgiveness, let's say we're believing a lie, um, of some sort. And I think that that's where the, that's where the disconnect comes in. Um, it, the Bible talks a lot about truth, like you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.
That's a verse in John and I truly believe that. God uses when we are truthful with ourselves and truthful with him. There's a lot of healing that happens with that. Yeah, can you make a direct connection? So I'm just thinking like, if I tell someone, if someone comes to me and says, I can't lose the weight, maybe they're [00:20:00] holding onto some weight and they've tried some things.
And so from the, from the evidence-based scientific side, right? Where we look at like, okay, we're gonna change your nutrition, do this, this, and this, and then this is a particular outcome that you're going to get. Can you give us an example of that? As it relates to emotional and spiritual healing. Yeah.
Doing that work, I'm just, I'm wanting to make that connection for everyone. Sure, sure. Okay. Um, I. A lot of it goes back to your nervous system. And have you guys talked a lot about, you know, on this podcast nervous system and all that? I just kind of was wondering, you know, your listeners kind of where they are with that topic specifically, but not a ton.
We just had an expert that talked about it a couple weeks prior. Sure. So it, it is an, it is an episode, um, before this one, but not much. Okay. So I'm gonna try to give like. The best sort of overview that I can. So with our nervous system, there's parasympathetic and sympathetic. [00:21:00] Um, parasympathetic is like the healing side.
Sympathetic is like the fight or flight. Um. Side that you, you really can't heal if, if you're constantly in this fight or flight, sympathetic side of your nervous system. And our nervous system is there as a whole. That's only one branch of it with, with the two different parts. But our nervous system is in place to keep us safe.
So it's constantly scanning for safety to determine how it programs or, or, um, signals our body to. To, um, perform, if that makes sense. Right. It, it's constantly scanning because our body was made so amazingly that that system was put in place because it, it wants to keep us safe. And so tying that in and knowing that into the emotional and spiritual, um, there's actually something called the Anatomy of a Wound.
It was in a, it's in a book called Be Healed by Bob Schultz, and it just talks about how. Um, if we [00:22:00] have this wound, this inner wound, which is like an emotional wound, um, that happens, I mean, these could be, this could be like abuse, abandonment, neglect, a traumatic event, or it could just be a lot of little things that, that you just have this kind of wound and then based on that wound you have created these lies or beliefs.
Based on it. And so a lot of times these are things like, I'm not lovable, or I'm not good enough, or et cetera. And then you have made, uh, these vows, if you think about like wounds, inner beliefs, and then vows, um, it's just kind of a ripple effect. These are things like, um, no one, I'm just gonna live a life so that no one can hurt me again.
Um, I'm just going to, uh, I won't let anybody get close to me. Those types of things. And so. All of those things, um, this inner wound, and then you've made the beliefs and then you have these valves. All of that is telling your body that you aren't safe. You aren't safe, um, with just who you are. You aren't safe as [00:23:00] you are.
And so just that one thing triggers our nervous system to be on edge. Now I get there's different levels of being on edge, if that makes sense. And, and staying in that fight or flight type of, uh, side of your nervous system. But I also want you to realize that's only one thing that keeps you stuck in that, that part of your nervous system.
I mean, there is, um, I'm just trying to think. Daily stressors. There's fights with people. There's, um. Conflict at work. There's driving down the road, there's, you know, nutrition is definitely part of it. Living, leading a sedentary lifestyle. All of these things play a part in are we staying more so in that sympathetic, dominant nervous system or, or can we get in this parasympathetic healing side of our nervous system?
And for some people. Uh, the only time they're in that is, is when they sleep, and sometimes that's not even that long. And so, and so they're like, well, why can't I heal? Like. Your [00:24:00] body has zero chance of healing. To be honest, if you're constantly stuck in this, you know, this side of your nervous system that's just on edge, there's just so much of a ripple effect that happens.
You know, you run through minerals quicker. You're not gonna digest properly, you're, you're just. You're gonna be on edge and irritable. Um, does that make sense? Yeah. How does someone know they're in that space? Like we kind of just live in a world that is accepting of busy and going, how do, how do we differentiate between like, yeah, I'm busy, I'm f I'm full, I have a full life, versus like, I'm running in the sympathetic flight fight or flight constantly.
Well, um, is it easy for you to relax? How is your rest at night? Um, do you feel tired all the time? Are you irritable? Like those are some physical things. I mean, are you, are you fatigued? I mean, if you get sick, do you get over it quickly? Um, do you have any chronic health issues that. Just don't seem to be [00:25:00] getting any better.
Do you have weight that you're holding onto? Um, those are some that come to mind. You know, and I get, I, I get that, you know, I'm probably speaking to a certain type of person that wants to know the root of their issue. Some people don't care, and that's okay. And I'm not speaking to those people probably because I fully understand that.
This might be a stretch, but I don't think it is for some people, I think some people are desperate for healing and they're not getting it only with the physical, and that's where I was and that's where a lot of people are, I think because especially if people that have been really only focusing on their physical health and they've done all the diets and they're, they're living a clean lifestyle and they're doing all these things, okay, well, what's the next step?
Because I've done all these things and yeah, I'm better, but I'm not really where I wanna be and I feel like there's something else. This is that something else? Yeah. Okay. Bridge that gap for us then. Okay. In like [00:26:00] to who? What am I? So yeah. Somebody that is feeling like, Hey, maybe I wanna have a, a. A deeper healing root cause.
Okay. Like I do feel, I mean, maybe we could put myself on the spot. Let's just see. Sure. Let's try it. I don't know. Okay. Um, I am busy. I have three kids. They're little and I have my, I am a very like type A person. I am like, go, I am accomplish, I'm an Enneagram eight. If that, if that means anything to you.
Yeah. Yeah. Um, and I, I wanna do 20,000 things and I have a hard time relaxing. I sleep well at night. Okay. Um, and I feel pretty okay, but a lot of times, like I have a hard time relaxing and like really. Slowing down. That's really hard for me. Um, and mostly, you know, my health is pretty good. I've worked on a lot of things, but this is a good, an [00:27:00] interesting thing.
I don't know, maybe it has nothing to do with this. We'll try it. Okay. I have low back pain that's kind of starting to like recur, like it just keeps coming back and back. And I sit at a computer a lot. Yeah. Like, so there's some physical things, but. Maybe help, maybe like, I'll put myself on the spot, and you kind of mentioned this, like bridging, okay, this emotional, spiritual, I don't know.
Is that worth trying? Yeah, yeah. Okay. Yeah, sure. So, okay, I'll start with the physical thing you mentioned just low back. Okay. Low back typically means that your adrenals are a little bit fatigued. So your adrenals, when you are in that sympathetic, dominant nervous system, they're just. On edge all the time.
They're just, your body's asking it to produce cortisol because that's the stress hormone. And that's what you know, you're gonna stay in producing more cortisol. Um, if, if your body is not feeling safe, you're, um, it's telling your sympathetic nervous system. Okay. I need you to, to act. Um. So that would be one connection I would make to say, [00:28:00] okay, well you probably are maybe in this side of, of, especially if you can't relax very well.
Okay. Yeah. Um, I guess my next thought would be, and this is really something that has to be like, um, I. A decision to be made. You know, because here's the thing, we're all, we're all kind of busy, right? But there's busy, and then there's like soul level exhausted. Okay. And that to me is like, oh, that's a red, that's a red flag.
You know? Um, so I just think a lot of this is we have to get still and we have to make time. To get still and, and get out of that fight or flight a little bit. Because when you're in fight or flight, a lot of times your thinking brain is not turned on, right? You're just, you're just in the, I just need to check off my list.
And you're kind of a little bit all over the place and sometimes your thinking brain isn't turned on as much. And, um, or, or logical brain, maybe I could put it that way. Um, and so it [00:29:00] does take getting out of that, um. And, and making a little bit of quiet time. I'm not saying, listen, I'm not saying you need to go on like a, a long, you know, Sabbath retreat or whatever.
That would be great. But like, you don't, nobody probably is gonna start there. It starts with just, um, some intentional time, quiet time, some intentional, I think time in the word or, um, meditating on the word, or meditating in general prayer, those types of things, because. As I, I believe as broken humans, we can't do this work on ourselves.
Um, I fully believe that the Lord does this. We just have to be obedient and available for him to do it. So there is a lot of intention that involve that goes on in this process. I'm not gonna lie, it's just you have to want it. But I do think people, they, even if physical healing is the main driver. If it drives you to the Lord, I think that's the plan.
I think that's [00:30:00] great. You know, even though our intentions aren't always. Pure, I think he uses them for good. So, um, does that make sense? And kind of answer your question. Yeah, no, I think that's helpful just to hopefully create a visual for everyone. Yeah. So I know you're gonna go like a little bit more specific and step by step Yes.
In your masterclass inside our women's wellness hub. Um, but like, where do we start? So what would be a good, like, okay, I'm listening to this podcast, I want to start opening that. That channel of communication. Yeah. With the Lord healing my body. Like maybe that's new to me, but I'm, I'm, I'm in it. I'm feeling like, okay, yeah, I see that maybe some of these things could be connected and I need to incorporate more of this spiritual physic or emotional connection, um, to support my whole body health and wellness.
Yeah. Where do I start? You mentioned getting. Still. I did. Yeah. What else? Um, yeah, so the getting still part, sometimes that's a little hard. Um, [00:31:00] but, you know, quiet stillness, even if it's, I, I find in the morning it's great to at least start that because I feel like when you, you start your day that way, it just kind of bleeds into the rest of your day.
I mean, the Bible says pray without ceasing. So obviously like that's the goal, but nobody really starts there. Um, so I would say in the morning, try to find. A time that you could just be still, even if it's for five minutes. Um, but hopefully that grows and hopefully you start to crave that. I know that's what happened to me.
I mean, I was, um, I worked full-time pharmacy up until like nine years ago, and so. It, it took a while for me to come out of that. So that's another thing. Don't expect it to happen overnight. I mean, it might, but it's going, you're basically changing your habits and your thought processes, so that is going to take time.
Um, so that's one thing, but. A, another really easy thing to do is just ask, um, I pray a lot. Like, you know, ask the Lord to help you see these things because I, [00:32:00] that, that's part of the seeking, you know, we, we have to ask him and, and really seek and, and hopefully, you know, he'll open up our eyes and open up our ears to see these connections because it's one thing for me to tell you, but it's quite another for you to start looking around and seeing Oh, okay.
This really might be a thing. You know, I really might need to spend more time or intention with this. So I really think it's a whole process, but it has to start somewhere. And that's where I would suggest starting if you're just like, this is completely new and I don't even know. Yeah. What to do. Being still is very hard, especially for women.
So just opening the opportunity for that connection to start happening, you know, without expectation. Um, do you have any parting words for the woman who is listening to this episode right now? Yeah. Um, I think that, you know. As a Christian, I'm called to go a different way than culture because culture leads us in one direction [00:33:00] and I think we're called to go in a different direction.
So if this feels completely anti-cultural, it is, you have to realize that yes, there are things that we need to do, but do we need to be doing everything we're doing? Maybe not. Um, are there things that we need to say no to? Probably. Are there other things that we need to say yes to? You know, prob Yeah.
Because, um, if we really want to live in a different way, something's gotta change. And sometimes that's really hard. But I, I know that he uses that for good too, and that's part of the refining process. So, um, I would just say if, if this feels a little different, it is, but it's, there's good things on the other side.
I love it. And, um, what, what's the phrase I'm trying to think of? Like, good things take time. You know? They do and they require effort, so, but it's, thank you. Go ahead. So good. No, I was just saying it's so worth it and it's, there's so much joy. I know we've talked a lot about physical healing, but don't we wanna experience more peace and joy?
I think most people [00:34:00] would say yes. I promise there's more of that on the other side for sure. Yes and joy that can exist even with. Hard things. Hard, hard surfaces life, right? Yeah. Ailments and things like that, that you can still see that joy. So thank you so much for this conversation. It was lovely. Um, will you tell us more about where we can find you if we wanna connect with you more?
Yeah, of course. Um, so I am pretty active on Instagram. It's my name Carrie Coie. Um, that's KARI. C-O-O-D-Y. And then I have an online practice called Cornerstone Integrative Healing, and that is the website name and our handle on Instagram as well. Those are two great ways to connect with us, and we also have a podcast on the same name, the Cornerstone Integrated Healing.
